Pratt and Whitney Scholarship Winner

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Congratulations to Lauren Kemerer, 5th Quarter Avionics student, who received the Pratt and Whitney Maintenance Scholarship!

After graduation, Lauren will have the chance to travel to one of P&W’s courses and have the opportunity to familiarize herself with the systems, maintenance, and inspection procedures for P&W’s line of engines.

Learning the ropes on Pratt & Whitney engines, some of the most commonly used jet engines in the world, these experiences will give Lauren the edge when she is ready to find a job. Nice job, Lauren!

New Equipment Acquisitions

Friday, December 18th, 2009

PIA received ten Slick magnetos from Champion Aerospace (www.championaerospace.com) last week. These are the most common mags found in 4- and 6-cylinder engines. PIA’s Frank Bria feels that Slick magnetos can be found in 90% of aviation’s single and twin engine aircraft. These make excellent training tools and were sent up to our Youngstown campus. Thank you, Champion Aerospace, for your donation.

PIA also just received two thrust reversers off of a G2 from Fugro Earth Data (www.fugroearthdata.com). Known for its loud engines, the G2’s are now being modified with “hush kits” to quiet its engines over residential areas and around airports. Because of this push, we were happy to receive these systems for our students to work on from Fugro. Thanks!

If you have out-dated or surplus equipment in your hangar, consider donating it to PIA. As a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit institution, donations can be tax-deductible. Contact Frank Bria at 412.346.2136 or fbria@pia.edu

In the hangar…

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

A Stinson 10 from the 1940s was tugged into our hangar yesterday. This cloth-winged aircraft was painted in WWII Civil Air Patrol livery by Squadron 602 here at AGC.

Planes similar to this one hunted subs along the US coastline during WWII. This particular aircraft allowed our seventh quarter students, under the instruction of Mr. Tom O’Keefe, the opportunity to practice their weight and balance skills with a vintage aircraft.

Thank you for supporting the job fair

Monday, November 16th, 2009

I would like to thank everyone who had a hand in making the 2009 Job Fair at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport a success.

Thank you to the YNG airport staff who allowed us to use the terminal building and helped run the show behind the scenes. Thanks to Mikeee’s restaurant for opening up for all of the participants and serving what may be the best pulled pork sandwich around!

Thank you to Randy Reynolds, PIA’s YNG school director, and his staff for their patience and willingness to send their students and give tours of the facility.

Thank you to the employers/recruiters who traveled to meet our great students and alumni. Coming a long distance to a job fair can often result in at least three days away from the office and family. I hope that such a sacrifice paid off by allowing you to meet many possible employees in one time frame.

Thank you to the alumni and students who came to meet these employers. Without a large turnout, employers may not want to come to such events–making it harder for you to meet them. Large numbers of informed and willing workers make such events successful.

Plans are in the works for the next job fair (March 4 in Pittsburgh). Keep an eye out for upcoming on campus interviews too.

Students Return

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

We are happy to see our students return today, refreshed from their between-quarter break. It was very quiet at the main campus yesterday. It is invigorating to feel the energy in the school today as we start the next quarter. I’m sure everyone else feels the same!
